This part of our Australia road trip was easily the best! North Queensland is absolutely beautiful and we found some incredible spots that were really quiet considering we visited during the Christmas school holidays.
Our first day was spent looking around Townsville and hanging out down at The Strand. If you have time, definitely visit Magnetic Island, it’s only 20 minutes off the coast of Townsville and really is an island paradise. We stayed at the newly renovated The Ville Resort and Casino which was fantastic. We would definitely stay there again!
Next we made our way further north towards Cairns. On our way we stopped at the spectacular Milaa Milaa Falls and Ellinjaa Falls for a quick swim. We also made time to visit Paronella Park – a castle built in the early 1900’s by Spanish man Jose’ Paronella and set amongst tropical rainforest.
After a night in Cairns we drove to Port Douglas. On the way, we stopped at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures – which was about as close to a crocodile as i’d ever like to be. We based ourselves in Port Douglas for the next few night while we explored the region. It’s a beautiful little town with cute little shops and great places to eat out – the Court House Hotel was our favourite. Rex Smeal Park is lined with palm trees and is a great place to go and sit and watch the sunset.
The next couple of days were full of adventure. We visited Mossman Gorge for a swim – quick tip: dont visit during holiday season or visit early in the day because it gets packed from mid-morning onwards. Then we visited the Daintree Rainforest which was a huge tick off our bucket-list. Mount Alexandra is a beautiful lookout in the Daintree that offers great views out towards the ocean.
There are a few different beaches you can stop at after crossing the Daintree River – just remember you can’t swim because there’s crocs! We chose to stop at Cow Bay and there wasn’t a single person there. We had the place to ourselves and we just hung out on the beach while we had lunch.
Our favourite beach though was Cape Tribulation. It reminded me of something out of Jurassic Park. Spending a day here, eating pizza on the beach, was the perfect way to end our East Coast Australia road trip.
